Research and Instructional Services
Research and Instructional Services (RIS) offers personal assistance and instruction in the use of library resources to members of the ECU community (both on-campus and online learners). Staff provide assistance in person, via e-mail, chat and telephone, and through online collaboration tools. An extensive scaffolded information literacy program is at the heart of the Department’s activities. RIS staff support large format poster printing for educational use and a facility for recording presentations. The department is located on the first floor of Joyner Library in a student-centered space that facilitates learning and creativity.
Music Library
The Music Library is the gem in the musical crown of eastern North Carolina. It has one of the largest music collections in the state and is home to Joyner’s entire audio recording collection as well as the music-related portion of its video recording collection. In addition, the Music Library offers music scores, books, journals, microforms, and streaming media dealing with every musical style and genre from classical to rock to reggae. The Music Library also provides an A/V room, study space, loanable equipment, and music reference assistance.
Courtyard
Joyner Library’s courtyard offers students the chance to relax or study al fresco at six tables shaded by canopy umbrellas. Each table seats up to four people; two additional benches line the courtyard’s brick paver perimeter. Several modern sculptures by ECU School of Art and Design alumni, as well as the lush green landscaping, accentuate the open space. The courtyard is wheelchair accessible.
Instruction Room #1618
Instruction Room 1618 has state of the art technology in a classroom that can accommodate up to 40 students. Five tables seating up to eight students each are ready to support student’s equipment or the fleet of library-owned iPads. Monitors can project locally from a laptop or from the instructor station located at the front of the room. The instructor teaches from a SMART podium projected to an 85″ monitor.
Instruction Room #1615
Instruction Room 1615 features a more traditional table/chair layout for approximately 40 students, a SMART podium connected to a projector for the instructor, and soundproofing.
Instruction Room #1020
Instruction Room 1020 is equipped with desktop computers and a SMART podium connected to a short throw projector. The room contains a beautiful mural entitled “Tree of Knowledge” that was created by a former ECU student. The mural features strong purple tones of silhouetted students around a tree raising their arms to gather glowing orbs.
Conference Room/Assembly Room #2301
This conference room seats up to 50 people and is equipped for hybrid as well as in person meetings with a desktop computer, one-touch set up, and multiple microphones and cameras. It is used for library events and meetings as well as by faculty across campus for professional development and lectures.
Graduate Lounge
The Graduate Lounge was designed specifically for graduate students based on their input. We regularly assess, modify, and update the room’s furnishings and features based on new student feedback. Multiple seating choices, whiteboards, and a print station with scanning/emailing capability are standard features. Graduate students simply tap their ECU ID to the card reader to use the room. The room is popular with students from multiple disciplines, who use it as a place to relax and recharge, as well as to study.
Study Rooms
Individual and group study rooms are in high demand by ECU students. Group study rooms accommodate 6-8 people and have large monitors that connect to laptop computers for collaborative work as well as whiteboards or writable walls. Smaller rooms are ideal for 1-2 people to use for study, research, and projects. Rooms can be reserved up to two weeks in advance. When available, faculty can use the rooms to hold office hours, providing a space that is familiar and easily accessible by students.
