Rhem/Schwarzmann Prize for Recognition of Student Research
The Rhem/Schwarzmann Prize is awarded annually to East Carolina University undergraduate and graduate students who complete research projects using Special Collections material. Sources may include materials in the East Carolina Manuscript Collection, the Verona Joyner Langford North Carolina Collection, University Archives and our various rare book collections. The prize was established by Mrs. Ann Schwarzmann to honor William and Emily Rhem and Theodore and Ann Schwarzmann. Prizes of $750, $500 and $250 will be awarded to first-, second-, and third-place winners, respectively.
Submission Guidelines
- Projects must make significant use of primary sources held by J.Y. Joyner Library’s Special Collections Division.
- Projects can come from any ECU course taken during the summer or fall of 2023, or the spring of 2024 as long as the entrant was enrolled as an undergraduate or graduate student at East Carolina University.
- Submissions may be traditional papers or digital projects. Papers should be no less than 2,500 words in length and should be submitted with a bibliography. Digital projects should be submitted in the form of a PDF or Microsoft Word document that includes a written summary of work (250-500 words), identification of scholarly objectives, a link/URL to the completed project, and a bibliography.
- Submitted works will be judged on the basis of (a) originality of topic; (b) quality of research; (c) quality of style, including documentation; and (d) overall excellence.
- The recipient of the award must agree to allow their work to be added to the ECU Libraries institutional repository for public use (see applicant information form).
Submission Instructions
Entrants must submit projects electronically as a PDF or Microsoft Word document by Wednesday, May 1, 2024. Additionally, entrants must submit the applicant information form. Submissions should be sent by e-mail to John Lawrence, Assistant Director for Special Collections.
Winners will be notified no later than the beginning of fall semester of 2024.
