Study options expand with new family room

Recently added to the study room options at the ECU main campus library is a family study room, equipped with LEGO toys, magnetic tiles, puzzles, a tactile wall, interactive alphabet rug and many more items for youngsters to enjoy.

The room is located on the second floor of the library, near the stairwell next to the elevator.

Plenty of purple and gold spirit in the Joyner Library family study room located on the second floor.

All caregivers are invited to use this space for them and their child to enrich their academic and studying experience. The family room is only for parents or caregivers who have children with them. It can be reserved for up to 2 hours per day.

“We are thrilled to kick off the fall semester by opening a family study room on the second floor of Joyner Library,” Academic Library Services director Jan Lewis said. “We know that many of our students and faculty are balancing work and family responsibilities. To make it a little easier, we’ve outfitted this room with toys, books and furnishings to help adults get some work done while the little ones safely play with puzzles, blocks and other educational toys. I’ve tried it out with my 5-year-old granddaughter, and she gives it two thumbs up. Her favorite thing may be the rug – she enjoyed singing the alphabet song, playing hopscotch and creating new songs inspired by the numbers, pictures and letters on this colorful rug. Try it out and let us know what your child likes most!”

For questions or comments about the family room, contact ALS assistant director for public services, Mark Sanders, at sandersm@ecu.edu.

The addition of this room is part of various changes and additions made to study spaces in the library during Summer 2023.

The sensory space on the second floor continues to add new items. There have been seating and equipment upgrades in some rooms, and other alternative study rooms include brightly colored walls, sensory bubble tubes, soothing lighting and ambiance designed to inspire.
