Ledonia Wright Cultural Center hosts “Beyond Bricks and Mortar” exhibit.

Photos from the library’s 2016 “Beyond Bricks and Mortar” exhibition and oral history project are currently on display in the Ledonia Wright Cultural Center in the Main Campus Student Center through the end of April. The project explores the history of the African American community anchored by the Sycamore Hill Missionary Baptist Church, which once stood where Greenville’s Town Common is now located. The photographs and personal stories featured illustrate that a community is much more than the bricks and mortar used to construct its buildings.

You can view the exhibit photographs and hear the oral histories in the library’s Digital Collection.

The Sycamore Hill Gateway Plaza at Greenville’s Town Common was designed to honor the community and the church. Read more about its design process here.
