Birth of East Carolina Teachers Training School

This post was inspired by the founding of East Carolina Teachers Training School (ECTTS) in 1909, and features materials from the Robert Lee Humber, Jr. Papers.

In preparation for his Founders Day address in March 1948, Robert Lee Humber, Jr. interviewed J. Y. Joyner, one of the founders of East Carolina Teachers Training School, who had been Superintendent of Public Instruction at the time of its founding in 1909. Later, Humber transcribed his interview notes and sent the transcript to Joyner for his approval. Joyner signed and dated the transcript and returned it to Humber, who kept the copy in his papers.
