New Exhibit and Upcoming Talk- Neyuherú·kęʼ Wampum Belt from the Tuscarora Nation of New York
In honor of Native American Heritage Month, University Archives is curating an exhibit featuring the Neyuherú·kęʼ Wampum Belt from the Tuscarora Nation of New York and hosting a related educational event.
The exhibit will be on display just outside the North Carolina Collection Room on the 3rd floor of Joyner Library for the entire month of November. It will showcase and provide context about this wampum belt, wampum belts more generally and the history of the Tuscarora in North Carolina.
The event will take place in the North Carolina Collection Room on November 13, 2024 at 6:30 pm. David Locklear will conduct a short land acknowledgement and speak about the importance of wampum belts to his North Carolina community, Joey Crutchfield will discuss the importance of powwows to indigenous communities in North Carolina and Virginia, and ECU graduate student Travis Dunn will discuss the digital humanities project, South Atlantic Powwow Archive, he created for a public history class and plans to continue as a community archive. The event is free and open to the public. Light refreshments will be served. Parking is available in the parking deck next to the Main Campus Student Center.
