Sports were an important part of campus social life in the school’s early years as well as a key component of the curriculum in which all students were expected to participate. Women’s intramural basketball began at East Carolina in 1910. In this photograph, eight members of the 1930 East Carolina Teachers College Senior Basketball Team pose with the Thanksgiving Day game cup. A basketball tournament between the classes was held on campus every Thanksgiving. This photograph helps us begin to understand how much women’s basketball has changed in the 92 years since it was taken.
