Description:

Sarah Blakeslee (1912-2005) studied art at the Corcoran School of Art in Washington and at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in Philadelphia. In 1936 she married her former teacher at the PAFA, Francis Speight. The Speights moved from Pennsylvania to Greenville in 1961, where Francis accepted a position as artist in residence at East Carolina College. Sarah taught classes at local art centers, including the one in Greenville, and developed a solid reputation for her landscapes, still lifes, and portraits. Here she shows paintings that were to appear in an exhibition at the Greenville Art Center. The photograph, dated January 29, 1963, is from the Daily Reflector Negative Collection.
