Description:

Lucy Cherry Crisp (1899-1977), a native of Edgecombe County, N.C., studied music at the Woman’s College of the University of North Carolina and later studied at Boston University, Columbia University, and Radcliffe College. During her career she taught music, worked for religious organizations, penned a column for the Raleigh News and Observer, and directed art galleries and museums in Greenville, Raleigh, and Florence, S.C. In the 1930s, Miss Crisp met George Washington Carver. They corresponded for many years, and Miss Crisp spent considerable time on a biography of Carver that was never published. This photograph, taken circa 1940, shows Miss Crisp with her portrait bust of Dr. Carver. The Lucy Cherry Crisp Papers document her varied career.
