Description:

This is a photograph from a concert performance by The Temptations at ECU. This image comes from the University Archives (PAA 530, # ECU/06/E). The date given is November 8, 1973. The photo is credited to Fountainhead, the student newspaper now known as The East Carolinian. From my basic research it appears that the only two original members of the group at this performance were Melvin Franklin and Otis Williams. Like a lot of other bands, the group went through many different lineups throughout their history.

Browsing through the ECU yearbooks it’s plain to see that ECC/ECU had a great tradition of bringing in popular acts to perform. Among many others, these acts have included B.J. Thomas, Flip Wilson, Johnny Mathis, Count Basie, Ray Charles, Louis Armstrong, The Smothers Brothers, The Dave Brubeck Quartet, the Coasters, Ike and Tina Tuner Revue and Chicago. It was definitely a golden era, one we won’t see again.

Copies of yearbooks can be found in Special Collections and the North Carolina Collection.
