Pitt Theatre, Greenville, NC

Staff Person: Dale Sauter

Description:

The image below was taken in December 1958 for use in a Daily Reflector article related to businesses that are open on Christmas Day. I viewed the actual article on microfilm, but was unable to find details on which theater this is. I had to rely on the person that probably knows this collection of negatives better than anyone else. This was Roger Kammerer, a local historian and artist who lives here in Greenville. Roger informed me that this is Pitt Theatre, and that the ticket lady is Mrs. Sallie B. Reagan, wife of Bratha M. Reagan. Roger also added that Bratha ran the Deluxe Beauty and Barber Shop on Evans Street.

If you look closely, you can see that the movie (in CinemaScope) currently playing is Bullwhip, starring Guy Madison and Rhonda Fleming (referred to as the “Saddle Tramp and the Red-Headed Hellcat” on the poster). The admission sign says the cost is 50 cents for adults and 15 cents for children. I wonder how much a large popcorn was.

A finding aid for the Daily Reflector Negative Collection, 1949-1967 is available at Manuscript Collection 741.
