Joann Absi is the president of the NC School Library Media Association. She has been the media coordinator at Ashley High in New Hanover County since its opening in 2001 and is also the graduation coordinator for the school. Previous to that she has been the media coordinator at elementary, middle, and high school levels in New Hanover, Pender and Brunswick Counties. She has a B.S. in Education from Fitchburg State College in Massachusetts. She received her MLS from East Carolina University in 1987 and also received her CAS in Library Science from ECU in 2006.

Sedley Abercrombie is a fifth-year year elementary media coordinator in Davidson County. She earned her MLIS from ECU in August of 2009. In recent years, she has presented at various staff development workshops at school levels as well as at UNCG, NCTIES, and NCSLMA. Sedley loves her job and learning new ways to integrate technology into her media instruction.

Frances Bryant Bradburn is a consultant with the North Carolina New Schools Project and the Golden LEAF Foundation that focuses on 1:1 learning initiatives across the state. The former Director of Instructional Technology for the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction (NCDPI), Frances is a graduate of Wake Forest University and the University of North Carolina at Greensboro’s Department of Library and Information Science. She worked at the K-12, university, and state levels in a variety of media and technology positions. The former editor of North Carolina Libraries, Frances is author of Output Measures for School Library Media Programs (1999). She also reviews young adult titles for Booklist and has written a variety of journal articles on media and technology. Her current professional affiliations are with the American Library Association, the North Carolina School Library Media Association, the North Carolina Library Association, and the North Carolina Technology in Education Society. Frances was awarded the Mary Peacock Douglas Award in 1998, the UNC-G/SLIS Outstanding Alumnus in 1995, the East Carolina University Friend of Education in 2007, the NCLA Distinguished Service Award in 2007, the NCAECT Service Award in 2008, and North Carolina Association of School Librarians, Distinguished Service Award (now known as the Frances Bryant Bradburn Distinguished Service Award), October 2008.

Gloria Bradshaw has worked as the Conservation Lab Manager of the Preservation and Conservation unit in Joyner Library at East Carolina University since 1993. She is a member of the Joyner Library Disaster Committee and serves as Salvage Coordinator. Gloria oversees all conservation treatments in the unit and is responsible for ensuring all Environmental Health and Safety regulations are followed. Her training and research include art courses at ECU, Solinet/Lyrasis workshops in preservation and disaster planning, book and paper repair, deacidification treatments, mold recovery, and library binding for preservation. In pursuit of her training and research, Gloria has attended workshops at such institutions as ECU, North Carolina State University, Chapel Hill, Etherington Conservation Center, and Johns Hopkins. She received the ECU Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Innovation in 1996.

Christina Brayton is a second year media coordinator with Rowan Salisbury Schools. Currently teaching at North Rowan Middle School, Christina has also worked with high school and university students. She graduated from California State University, Fresno in 2005, with a B.A. in English, Medieval and Pre-Renaissance Literature and completed her M.A in Education, Library Media at East Tennessee State University in 2011. She has attended and taught seminars on a number of educational topics including Common Core/essential standards, text complexity, reading comprehension, eBook choices, Common Core and research, and Effective Teaching Strategies for the Common Core.

Carla Brooks was named the 2013 NCSLMA Media Coordinator of the Year. Carla is the school library media coordinator for Rockfish Elementary School, a K-5 school in Cumberland County. Earning her MLS from Indiana University in 1993, she has since worked in public, Army, and school libraries. She is a member of the Cumberland County Schools (CCS) Destiny Data Team and creates the program brochure for CCS Elementary Battle of the Books. She currently serves as an Elementary Battle of the Books coach, Accelerated Reader administrator, and co-technology mentor for her school. Mrs. Brooks is married with 12-year-old triplets.

LaShaunda Brown is a sixth-year teacher in Guilford County Schools. As a North Carolina Teaching Fellow, she graduated from UNC-Charlotte with a Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education. Currently, she is working towards a Master’s in K-12 Reading. Lashaunda incorporates technology resources within her classroom as a way to create greater interest and retention of information. Patch Clark is a professor in the School of Theatre and Dance at East Carolina University and coordinator of the Theatre for Youth and Theatre Education programs. Dr. Anthony Chow, an assistant professor at UNCG’s Department of Library and Information Studies, has 14 years of applied and teaching experience designing, testing, and evaluating websites for private industry and at the undergraduate and graduate university level. His interest in school library websites stems from his work and expertise in how people seek information in digital environments and how best to design these environments so they are as usable as possible to facilitate successful access to the information they seek. As a father of three, he is also extremely interested in how youth seek information and how usable and age-appropriate these spaces are for them. He has presented at state, national, and international conferences and has authored multiple peer-reviewed articles, books, and book chapters on this topic.

Cathy DuPre is a Media Coordinator at Merry Oaks International Academy, which is a Title 1 Elementary school in Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools. She is a member of the NCDPI team charged with the development of new library media standards and evaluation system for Media Coordinators. Cathy has been named to “Who’s Who Among American Teachers”, received the Time Warner Crystal Apple National Teacher Award twice, and has been the Gertrude Coward Award winner for Media Coordinator of the year. She has facilitated sessions for administrators on best practices for dual language media centers. In 2011, she was awarded a scholarship for the Lincoln Center Institute for Imaginative Learning and received a scholarship from the NC Arts Commission for Advanced Training. Cathy has presented workshops at the district and state levels on language learning, inquiry based research across languages, assessing student learning, and best practices for library media specialists.

Carol Gehringer is the Media Coordinator at GRACE Christian School, and works primarily on the K6 campus in Raleigh, NC. She received her Masters of Library & Information Studies from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, as well as a NC teaching license from coursework taken at ECU. GRACE Christian School is a 1:1 MacBook school with SMART Boards in all K-4th grade classrooms and projectors in all the 5th-12th grade classrooms. Carol is an integral part of the E4 Technology Team and is responsible for professional development and curriculum enhancement.

Joanna Gerakios has a B.S. in Middle Grades Education and MLS in Library Science from ECU. She has taught 8th grade language arts and social studies and worked as a school media coordinator in Pitt County. Since first entering the public library as a child, and later as a parent and educator, she has been a library enthusiast. She loves that being a school library media coordinator brings together the roles of teacher and librarian. Joanna has an interest in bringing books and technology together to empower educators and create student-centered learning environments. She currently works to facilitate media programs and integrate technology into the curriculum as a Media and Instructional Tech Specialist for the Pitt County school system. Gail Holmes has been in public education for 35 years. A graduate of NC A&T State University (Bachelor Degree – Business Education), UNC-Greensboro (Masters Degree – Business Education and Instructional Technology), and ECU (Masters of Library Science), she has taught grades 6-12; worked as technology facilitator, instructional technology coach, an adjunct professor at UNC- Greensboro in the department of Library Science; and is presently an Educator-on-Loan for North Carolina Department of Public Instruction Digital Teaching and Learning Division. She is a 2011 Kenan Fellow. Her project, “E-Teacher Training: 21st Century Training for the Classroom,” focused on integrating technology into the curriculum to empower students and provide teachers with resources to enhance learning and promote 21st century teaching. Gail coauthored the journal article “The Kenan Fellows Program for Curriculum and Leadership Development: Teaching Students to Think Outside the Book” and published it in The International Journal of Technology, Knowledge and Society. Cheryl Lederle-Ensign has worked as an Educational Resources Specialist at the Library of Congress since December of 2003. In that role, she has advanced the Library’s educational mission by providing more than 1000 teachers with professional development through workshops, presentations, and intensive institutes both in person and via webinar and videoconference. She has also played a significant role in shaping the Library’s online repository of classroom materials and resources for teachers (loc.gov/teachers) and continues to contribute to the development of those materials. Her background includes experiences in directing musical theatre as well as public speaking. Kathy Parker is a Raleigh native currently living in Sanford. Kathy is a lifelong educator who began her career as a high school English teacher. For ten years, Kathy served the students and faculty of Lee County High School as their library media coordinator during which time she earned her National Board certification. Jackie Ruffin-Pitman is a reenactor and story teller for the North Carolina Black Storytellers. She has worked with a state documentary on a reenactment of the Civil War. Recently, she reenacted Annie Johnson at the Liberia Plantation in Manassas, Virginia. She also presented “Our Story” at the North Carolina School Media Conference last October. Jackie has worked with the greatest storytellers such as Dr. Rex Ellis, Director of African American Museum Studies at the Smithsonian in Washington, DC.

Caroline (Cal) Shepard is the State Librarian of North Carolina. Formerly she was Program Director of Consulting Services at LYRASIS. In this role she was both a consultant and manager of the consulting program. From 1999 to 2006, she managed the Educational Services program at SOLINET. Prior to joining SOLINET, Cal served as Chief of Library Development at the State Library of North Carolina. Previous experience includes positions at the Forsyth County Public Library in Winston-Salem and the Nantahala Regional Library in Murphy, North Carolina. Cal has a MLS degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and a BA degree from the University of Colorado at Boulder. She is active in the American Library Association and serves on the board of the Association for Rural and Small Libraries.

Lou Saunders Sua, PhD is a Teaching Assistant Professor in the Department of Information and Library Science at East Carolina University. Prior to teaching at ECU, she worked for the last 30+ years in school, academic, and public libraries, as well as non-profit organizations. Among her research interests are Black women grassroots activism, community activism, Black women librarians activism, social justice and libraries, and the role of libraries in Black communities. Currently she teaches courses in children and young adult literature, diverse and special populations, and public libraries.

As the NC NASA Educator Resource Center director for over 25 years, Judy Walker works with both preservice and inservice teachers on how to incorporate NASA education resources into their curriculum. Her workshops focus on using hands-on inquiry based activities/resources and emerging technology to help teachers excite students about science and mathematics. Ms. Walker is also the Education/Curriculum Materials Librarian at UNCC and works with undergraduates, graduates, and faculty to develop inquiry-based lessons in all disciplines and how to infuse technology into their classrooms.

Laura Warmke is a 7th-12th grade Media Specialist. She works at GRACE Christian School, a 1:1 MacBook Air school, in Raleigh, NC. Laura is also in charge of technology professional development and integration at the middle school and high school levels. She led the effort to create “LevelUP!,” the flipped, game-based professional development currently in use at GRACE. Laura is a MLIS graduate of the University of Alabama, although she did her classes for her NC teaching license right here at ECU.

Kevin Washburn is a middle school media specialist for Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools. His focus area for professional development is in the advancement of electronic media for student use in the 21st Century. He is a strong advocate for digital media with a “gawker” interest in social media. Kevin just completed his licensure requirements as an Instructional Specialist at Appalachian State University and Media Supervision at UNC Greensboro. Having previously served as the district media specialist, he developed and presented programs on the alignment for the Common Core standards and school library media centers. He earned his MLIS from UNC Greensboro in 1997.

Teresa Wetherell is the school library media specialist at Highcroft Drive Elementary. She was a former classroom teacher with over eight years of experience in private, parochial, and public school settings. She also has over twenty years of experience as a school library media specialist in grades PreK-8 in Tennessee and New Jersey before moving to North Carolina. She holds a BS in Elementary Education and earned her MLS from ECU. Teresa has three grown children and a lab named Lucky.

Antoinetta G. Wooley has worked with exceptional children for 25 years. Currently, she serves as teacher/chairperson of exceptional children at Greene Central High School in Snow Hill, North Carolina. Antoinetta earned her bachelor’s in Special Education from Elizabeth City State University, a master’s in Special Education from Grand Canyon University, and an Ed. S. in Curriculum and Instruction from Capella University. Her professional career spans elementary, middle, and high schools in Goldsboro, Kinston, and Snow Hill, NC.

As a librarian, she worked in Cataloging and Collection Development at the University of Florida. Before moving to Greenville, she taught in MLS programs at the University of South Florida and Valdosta State University. She is a graduate of Florida State University and the University of Florida.
