Amanda Bosch currently works as director of the Curriculum Materials Center at Catawba College. She is also an instructor in the School of Education where she teaches introduction to teaching and technology courses. Amanda has worked as an elementary school media specialist and has taught English at the secondary level. She served as Vice President of the North Carolina Association of Curriculum Materials Centers, where she is currently serving her second term as President. She is also the Catawba College Student North Carolina Association of Educators (SNCAE) Advisor.

Frances Bradburn

Frances Bryant Bradburn is a consultant with the North Carolina New Schools Project and the Golden LEAF Foundation that focuses on 1:1 learning initiatives across the state. The former Director of Instructional Technology for the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction (NCDPI), Frances is a graduate of Wake Forest University and the University of North Carolina at Greensboro’s Department of Library and Information Science. She worked at the K-12, university, and state levels in a variety of media and technology positions. The former editor of North Carolina Libraries, Frances is author of Output Measures for School Library Programs. She also reviews young adult titles for Booklist and has written a variety of journal articles on media and technology. Her current professional affiliations are with the American Library Association, the North Carolina School Library Media Association, the North Carolina Library Association, and the North Carolina Technology in Education Society. Frances was awarded the Mary Peacock Douglas Award in 1998, the UNC-G/SLIS Outstanding Alumnus in 1995, the East Carolina University Friend of Education in 2007, the NCLA Distinguished Service Award in 2007, the NCAECT Service Award in 2008, and North Carolina Association of School Librarians, Distinguished Service Award (now known as the Frances Bryant Bradburn Distinguished Service Award), October 2008.

Ryan Bradley

Ryan Bradley is a first year student in the Program in Maritime Studies at ECU. He has a Bachelor’s degree in English from the State University of New York at Potsdam. He presently works in the Conservation and Preservation unit at Joyner Library. Ryan is learning the skills for conservation treatments to rare and special collection materials. His interests include mountain biking and scuba diving.

Gloria Bradshaw

Gloria Bradshaw has worked as the Conservation Lab Manager of the Preservation and Conservation unit in Joyner Library at East Carolina University since 1993. She is a member of the Joyner Library Disaster Committee and serves as Salvage Coordinator. Gloria oversees all conservation treatments in the unit and is responsible for ensuring all Environmental Health and Safety regulations are followed. Her training and research include art courses at ECU, Solinet/Lyrasis workshops in preservation and disaster planning, book and paper repair, deacidification treatments, mold recovery and library binding for preservation. In pursuit of her training and research, Gloria has traveled, attending workshops at such institutions as ECU, North Carolina State University, Chapel Hill, Etherington Conservation Center, and Johns Hopkins. She received the ECU Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Innovation in 1996.

Christie Canter earned her MLS from ECU in 2010 and has served as a Media Coordinator at Northern Middle School for four years. While working in the Person County School System, Christie was recognized as Teacher of the Week, piloted Essentials Standards with NCDPI, piloted e-book use with Barnes and Noble, and served as a 1:1 facilitator. In addition to coaching three sports, she serves as an athlete tutor every day after school.

Patricia “Patch” Clark is an Associate Professor and coordinator for the Theatre for Youth and Theatre Education Programs at East Carolina University. She is the founder and Director of the ECU Storybook Theatre which tours schools, libraries and festivals and appears as part of ECU’s ArtsSmart and Family Fare Series. She has directed The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe, James and the Giant Peach, Seussical the Musical, The Stinky Cheese Man, Charlotte’s Web, The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, The Jungle Book, The Secret Garden, Tales From Around the World, My Her, Reaching for the Stars, and The Runaway Bear. In addition, All Aboard America! and All Aboard South America! were both written and directed by Professor Clark.

Lisa Denning is in her fifth year as media coordinator at North Harnett Primary School in Angier, NC. She earned her BS in Elementary Education from Campbell University and taught 11 years in third and fourth grade classrooms. In 2008, she moved to the media center and has loved every second of it! Lisa earned her MLS degree from ECU in 2011. Mrs. Denning was the recipient of the North Carolina School Library Media Association (NCSLMA) and North Carolina Library Association (NCLA) graduate scholarships. In the past two years, she has been awarded the Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA) grant, Bright Ideas grant, and Harnett Off Broadway grant for media center projects. She is the president of the Media/Tech Club for Harnett County Schools. Mrs. Denning is married with two children, Caleb (10) and Emily (7).

Cathy DuPre is a Media Coordinator at Merry Oaks International Academy, a Title 1 Elementary school in Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools. She is a member of the NCDPI team charged with the development of new library media standards and evaluation system for Media Coordinators. Cathy has been named to “Who’s Who Among American Teachers”, received the Time Warner Crystal Apple National Teacher award twice and has been the Gertrude Coward Award winner for Media Coordinator of the year.She has facilitated sessions for administrators on best practices for dual language media centers. In 2011 she was awarded a scholarship for the Lincoln Center Institute for Imaginative Learning and received a scholarship from the NC Arts Commission for Advanced training (summer of 2012). Cathy has presented workshops at the district and state levels on language learning, inquiry based research across languages, assessing student learning, and best practices for library media specialists.

Maliha Farhadi

Maliha Farhadi is originally from Kabul, Afghanistan. She is married to Dr. Abdul-Shakoor Farhadi and has two children. She came to the United States as a Fulbright graduate student attending NC State University. Her MA is in Teaching English as a Second Language. She taught English at different levels, primary school to university, for fifteen years. Maliha moved to Greenville and started working in Joyner Library’s Circulation Department and later moved to the Teaching Resources Center. She has also earned her Master of Library Science. Teaching foreign students and working with the public has given her a broad perspective of understanding diverse populations such as race, age, religion, and cultural background.

William Gee is the Interlibrary Loan and Document Delivery Librarian at Joyner Library, East Carolina University. He holds a Master’s of Science in Information Science from the University of Tennessee and a Bachelor of Arts in History and Political Science as well as a paralegal certificate from Berry College. William has written and presented on issues related to scholarly communication, copyright, and interlibrary loan, including connecting K-12 schools to university libraries, expanding access to special collection materials, purchase-on-demand, e-books, copyright, and enhancing the provision of library services. He has actively served on committees with the American Library Association, the North Carolina Library Association, and the international Rethinking Resource Sharing Initiative.

Joanna Gerakios has a BS in Middle Grades Education and a MLS from East Carolina University. She has taught 8th grade language arts and social studies, and has worked as a school media coordinator. Since first entering the public library as a child, and later as a parent and educator, she is a library enthusiast. Joanna has an interest in bringing books and technology together to energize education and empower students. She is currently an Instructional Technology and Media Specialist for the Pitt County school system.

Chelsea Hauck is studying maritime archaeology at ECU’s Program in Maritime Studies.  She has a BA in Peace Studies from Goucher College in Baltimore, MD.  Her most recent studies have been focused on conservation and preservation within Maritime Studies. Chelsea currently has an internship with the CSS Neuse in Kinston, NC.  She is very excited to be working with the conservation of rare books and papers.

Whitney Hoffman, CEO of Hoffman Digital Media, has been producing education podcasts for over six years, including the LD Podcast (http://www.ldpodcast.com) and OB-GYN To Go (http://www.obgyntogo.com) a podcast for medical resident education. She is the coauthor with Jenifer Fox of The Differentiated Instruction Book of Lists. In addition to producing digital media for the web, she sits on the Technology Committee for the Kennett Consolidated School District and moderates a group on Personalized Learning for Edutopia, part of the George Lucas Education Foundation. Whitney speaks regularly to business, non-profit, and education groups on integrating social and digital media tools into projects. As Director of Operations of the Podcamp Foundation, Whitney has been involved in organizing community-based technology conferences, and consulting with similar projects in the US and overseas, including the Web2Open sessions at O’Reilly’s Web 2.0 Expo in New York City in November, 2009. Whitney has blogged for the Philadelphia Inquirer and Philly.com as part of Philadelphia’s Great Expectations Project. Ms. Oros has been employed as Grant Writer for Beaufort County Schools in Washington, North Carolina since March 2003. Prior to her position as Grant Writer, Ms. Oros served as Media Coordinator at the elementary and high school levels for 14 years. Ms. Oros earned an EdS in Curriculum and Instruction from East Carolina University and an MA in Library and Media Services from Appalachian State University. She holds certifications in supervision, administration, media supervisor, and media coordinator. In October 2012, Beaufort County Schools was awarded one of only 48 Innovative Approaches to Literacy (IAL) grants in the nation and the only one in North Carolina.

Kathy Parker is a Raleigh native currently living in Sanford. Kathy is a lifelong educator who began her career as a high school English teacher. For ten years, Kathy served the students and faculty of Lee County High School as their library media coordinator during which time she earned her National Board certification. In September, Kathy joined NCDPI’s Instructional Technology Division as State Library Media Consultant. In addition to literature, Kathy’s personal interests include crafting, gardening, and photography.

Even though Mrs. Pinyan has only been in her position a short time, she worked for many years as a parent volunteer helping students cultivate a passion for reading. In her library, she focuses on developing strategies to make her patrons more aware of the collection. She received her MLS from ECU in 2009. She received her BA from Wake Forest University in 1989.

Madeline is a graduate of East Tennessee University and received her MLS from ECU. She currently serves as Media Coordinator at Randleman Middle School in Randleman, NC, a school with 830 students and a staff of 77. Because Ms. Reed is a strong advocate for social and civil rights, the media center at her school has sponsored several “Everybody has a Vote” initiatives. This collaborative effort between the library and the Beta Club involves students in our country’s democratic election process. As a member of the NCAE Human and Civil Rights Commission, topics of social justice and equity have a special place in the library. Her personal interests include her three grown sons, mentoring new teachers, and reading.

In her first year as media coordinator, Kristy Sartain helped implement a joint program with the alternative learning program (ALP). At the North Carolina Collaborative Conference on Student Achievement in March, she and the ALP coordinator presented a program about reaching alternative learners. Now in its second year, their program continues to improve and expand. Kristy is a 2011 graduate of the ECU MLS program and will soon have an article published in Library Media Connection Magazine detailing her first year as a school librarian.

Caroline (Cal) Shepard was appointed the State Librarian of North Carolina effective February 1, 2012. Formerly she was Program Director of Consulting Services and Regional Director for the Southeast at LYRASIS. In this role she was both a consultant and manager of the consulting program. From 1999 to 2006, she managed the Educational Services program at SOLINET. Prior to joining SOLINET, Cal served as Chief of Library Development at the State Library of North Carolina. Previous experience includes positions at the Forsyth County Public Library in Winston-Salem and the Nantahala Regional Library in Murphy, North Carolina. Cal has a MLS degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and a BA degree in Anthropology from the University of Colorado at Boulder. She is active in the American Library Association and currently chairs ALA’s Training, Orientation, and Leadership Development Committee.

Zachary Taylor is a student employee at Joyner Library’s Preservation and Conservation Unit. Zachary has worked in the Conservation lab for 4 years. He is a senior at East Carolina University and is graduating with a BFA in Animation/Interactive Design. For one of his art projects, Zachary filmed and edited a video about the preserving and conserving process of a North Carolina Rare book. This video is being used in the Preservation and Conservation Unit as a teaching tool. Zachary assisted in the training of minor book repair for the 2012 Paraprofessional Conference at Joyner Library.

Dennis Teel

Dennis Teel is the principal at Northwest Elementary in Greenville, North Carolina.  He has served as an elementary and middle school teacher prior to becoming a middle school media specialist.  During his career, Dennis also worked at Sheppard Memorial Library and as evening reference librarian at Pitt Community College.  Mr. Teel has earned four degrees from East Carolina University and was recently admitted to their doctoral program in educational leadership.  He is also a graduate of the North Carolina Principal’s Executive Program and former certified Covey Trainer.  Dennis is a member of the PCAE, NCAE, NCATA, PCEAOP, PAPA, NCPAPA, NCASA, and NAESP/. In 2003 he was inducted into the East Carolina Educators’ Hall of Fame.  Other awards and recognitions are the 2006 Wachovia Principal of the Year Award for Pitt County, the Wachovia Principal of the Year 2006 Northeast Regional Finalist, and the Administrator of the Year Award from the North Carolina School Library Media Association in 2007.  During his career, he has presented at NCAECT, NCMSA, NCAEE, and Southeast Regional Technology and Teaching Annual Conferences.

Tom Terrell

She provides outreach services to approximately 36 public school systems in eastern North Carolina. Her previous experience includes special collections librarian in a chemical research company to a reference librarian in the community college.

Kevin Washburn is a middle school media specialist for Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools.  His focus area for professional development is in the advancement of electronic media for student use in the 21st Century.  He is a strong advocate for digital media with a “gawker” interest in social media.  Kevin just completed his licensure requirements as an Instructional Specialist at Appalachian State University and Media Supervision at UNC Greensboro.  Having previously served as the district media specialist, Kevin developed and presented programs on the alignment for the Common Core standards and school library media centers.  Kevin earned his MLIS from UNC Greensboro in 1997.

Kellie Williams is a media coordinator at Northwest Elementary in Greenville, NC. She has a degree in Psychology from North Carolina State University and is pursuing a Master’s in Library Science from East Carolina University.

Laura Williams currently works as director of the Curriculum Resources Center at Elon University and as a part-time instructor in the School of Education. She previously worked as a middle school media specialist for 12 years and a high school media specialist for one year.She served for five years on the executive board of the NC School Library Media Association, creating and maintaining the group’s website. Laura is currently Vice-President/President-Elect of the NC Association of Curriculum Materials Centers.

Elaine Yontz is a Professor and Former Chair in the Library Science Department of East Carolina University. As a librarian, she worked in Cataloging and Collection Development at the University of Florida. Before moving to Greenville, she taught in MLS programs at the University of South Florida and Valdosta State University. She is a graduate of Florida State University and the University of Florida.
