Danielle Boulden is a media coordinator at Ayden Elementary School. She has a Master’s degree in Instructional Technology from East Carolina University and is a certified media specialist. Danielle taught high school level social studies for five years, was a technology facilitator for two years, and has worked as a media specialist for the past four years.

Frances Bryant Bradburn is a consultant with the North Carolina New Schools Project and the Golden LEAF Foundation who focuses on 1:1 learning initiatives across the state. The former Director of Instructional Technology for NCDPI, Frances is a graduate of Wake Forest University and UNC-G’s Department of Library and Information Science. She has worked at the K-12, university, and state levels in a variety of media and technology positions. The former editor of North Carolina Libraries, Frances is author of Output Measures for School Library Programs; reviews young adult titles for Booklist, and has written a variety of journal articles on both media and technology. Her current professional affiliations are with the American Library Association, the North Carolina School Library Media Association, the North Carolina Library Association, and the North Carolina Technology in Education Society. Frances was awarded the Mary Peacock Douglas Award in 1998, the UNC-G/SLIS Outstanding Alumnus in 1995, the East Carolina University Friend of Education in 2007, the NCLA Distinguished Service Award in 2007, the NCAECT Service Award in 2008, and North Carolina Association of School Librarians, Distinguished Service Award (now known as the Frances Bryant Bradburn Distinguished Service Award), October 2008.

Gloria Bradshaw has worked as the Conservation Lab Manager of the Preservation and Conservation unit in Joyner Library at East Carolina University since 1993. She is a member of the Joyner Library Disaster Committee and serves as the Salvage Coordinator. Gloria oversees all conservation treatments in the unit and is responsible for ensuring all Environmental Health and Safety regulations are followed. Her training and research include art courses at ECU such as drawing and design, Solinet/Lyrasis workshops in preservation and disaster planning, book and paper repair, de-acidification treatments, mold recovery and library binding for preservation. In pursuit of her training and research, Gloria has traveled from North Carolina to Maryland attending workshops at such institutions as ECU, NC State, UNC Chapel Hill, Etherington Conservation Center and Johns Hopkins University. She received the ECU Chancellors Award for Excellence in Innovation in 1996.

Patricia “Patch” Clark (Director- ECU Storybook Theatre) is an Associate Professor and Coordinator of the Theatre Education and Theatre for Youth programs in the School of Theatre and Dance at East Carolina University. She has appeared in numerous ECU/Loessin Playhouse and ECU/Loessin Summer Theatre productions including Grease, My Fair Lady, Inherit the Wind, A Doll’s House, Misalliance, Our Town, The Sound of Music, Oklahoma, A View from the Bridge, Crazy for You, Yerma, Grapes of Wrath, The Time of Your Life, Footloose, Arsenic and Old Lace at the Turnage Theatre in Washington, N.C. and The Crucible. She directed the Off-Broadway premiere production of Katmandu at the John Houseman Studio Theatre in July of 2001. She also serves as the director for ECU’s Storybook Theatre for children and youth. Original productions for Storybook Theatre include Tales from Around the World, My Hero Reaching for the Stars, All Aboard America!, and All Aboard, South America! Other Storybook Theatre productions include The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe, Jungle Book, Willy Wonka, and Charlotte’s Web. Donna Corbo has worked in education for 20 years including serving as a media specialist for 12 years. At the present time she is a media and technology specialist at J P Knapp Early College High School. She has Masters Degrees from East Carolina University in Library Science and in Elementary Education. Donna also has an Advanced Graduate Study Certificate from Northcentral University in Teacher Leadership. She has previously presented at National and State Conferences as well as the East Carolina University Networking Summit. She lives in Currituck with her husband and two dogs.

April Dawkins is the President-Elect and Conference Chair for the NC School Library Media Association. She also represents high schools on the NC Young Adult Book Award Committee. April is a National Board Certified media specialist in Union County’s largest high school, Porter Ridge High School. Previously, she was a media specialist in Richmond County and Wake County. April also has taught social studies at Scotland High School. April holds a BA in history from Meredith College and an MLS from North Carolina Central University.

Cathy DuPre is serving her nineteenth year in education and her ninth year as a Media Specialist, which has been mostly spent in language immersion programs. She has been named Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools’ Gertrude Coward Award Winner for 2009-2010. She has presented workshops for her district, NCDPI Second Languages Teachers’ and Administrators’ Institutes and has served as a panelist and presented sessions at NCSLMA. Cathy has developed and shared her toolkit for services to the Spanish-speaking (a guide of resources for the elementary school library media specialist). She has written and received numerous grants for project based interdisciplinary units of study, has won the Time Warner Crystal Apple National Teacher Award twice and has been named to “Who’s Who among American Teachers.”

Sherry Edwards has served as a Media Specialist for 14 years, currently at Rock Ridge Elementary School. She attended the George Washington Teacher Institute in the summer of 2011. In her media center, Sherry has used historical information to teach her students about the history of North Carolina. She is the advisor of the Rock Ridge Chapter of the Tar Heel Junior Historian Association. This chapter was named the Rookie Chapter of the Year by the North Carolina Museum of History in 2011. Sherry Edwards holds a BA in History from Barton College and a MLS from East Carolina University.

Maliha Farhadi is originally from Kabul, Afghanistan. She is married to Dr. Abdul-Shakoor Farhadi and has two children. She came to the United States as a Fulbright graduate student attending NC State University. Her MA is in Teaching English as a Second Language. She taught English at different levels, primary school to university, for fifteen years. Maliha moved to Greenville and started working in Joyner Library’s Circulation Department and later moved to the Teaching Resources Center. She has also earned her Master of Library Science. Teaching foreign students and working with the public has given her a broad perspective of understanding diverse populations such as race, age, religion, and cultural background.

Karen Gardner is the 2011 North Carolina School Library Media Coordinator of the Year and the 2011 Pitt County Schools Media Coordinator of the Year. She is a National Board Certified Teacher in Library Media and has 29 years of experience in education, 27 of which she has served as a Media Coordinator in North Carolina. She is a successful grant writer, accumulating over $150,000 in grant funding over the last few years. She holds a BA in Education from UNC-Chapel Hill and a MLS from East Carolina University.

Joanna Gerakios has a BS in Middle Grades Education and a MLS from East Carolina University. She has taught 8th grade language arts and social studies, and has worked as a school media coordinator. Since first entering the public library as a child, and later as a parent and educator, she has been a library enthusiast. Joanna has an interest in bringing books and technology together to energize education and empower students. She currently works to facilitate instructional technology and media programs as an Instructional Technology and Media Specialist for the Pitt County school system.

Kim Gugino is a middle school Media Specialist in the Alamance Burlington School System (ABSS). After 8 years as a social studies teacher, she completed her Master of Library Science degree at East Carolina University, where she was awarded the Emily S. Boyce Fellowship Award. She also holds a Master of Education degree from UNC-Greensboro. She has presented at ABSS Successful Beginnings, ABSS Teacher’s College, and the North Carolina Social Studies Conference. She is a member of ABSLMA, NCSLMA, AASL, and ALA. She is passionate about teaching and learning and can imagine no greater profession than librarianship. She is blessed to share her life journey with her husband and their 4-year-old son.
Tracie Hampton

Tracie is a Conservation Technician with Joyner Library’s Preservation and Conservation unit and is responsible for General Collection repair and supervision of student workers. She has training in book conservation and repair from the Etheringon Conservation Center and the North Carolina Preservation Consortium. She also brings to Joyner her varied experiences from over a quarter century of working in academic, school and public libraries, and also museums. After earning a Bachelor of Arts in Liberal Studies from California State University San Bernardino, she married a career United States Marine and spent the next 20 years moving around the country. Upon his retirement from the Marines, Tracie and her husband decided to settle in beautiful eastern North Carolina. An avid sailing enthusiast, she is active in the Ragged Point Yacht Club as the club’s historian.

Deanna Harris is a National Board Certified Teacher and has been an educator for twenty years. Deanna has been a middle grades language arts teacher, an educator-on-loan at the NC Department of Public Instruction, and a middle grades media and technology coordinator. She has presented at workshops and facilitated presentations for her school and local district as well as other districts, and also for state and national organizations, including NCSLMA, AASL, and NSDC. Lionel has a B.S. in Social Science Education from Fayetteville State University, a Masters in School Administration from East Carolina University, and is slated to receive his EdD from UNCW in December 2011. He has worked as a high school social studies teacher and a middle school math teacher. He has also been an elementary, middle, and high school assistant principal. She has an associate degree in photography, and has been trained in disaster management, preservation, and salvage of paper, photographic and AV materials. She manages the Special Collections Preservation Lab and serves as stacks manager for the Rare Book and Manuscript Collections. She has presented at workshops on Salvaging Wetted Materials (photographic materials from disasters), EZ Archives at Home Basic Skills and Methods for Preservation and Conservation of Personal Collections, and Basics of Photographic Care and Display.

Marian N. McLawhorn is the North Carolina House Representative from House District 9, recently serving two terms as the Democratic Whip of the House. Representative McLawhorn has been honored with numerous public service awards including the Democratic Women of North Carolina “Star” Award. She served on the Education Committee of the National Conference of State Legislatures and on the Southern Legislative Conference of the Council of State Government Education Committee. She has been the mayor of Grifton and a town commissioner. In 2004, she was inducted into the East Carolina University Educators Hall of Fame. Prior to her service as State Representative, she was an Instructor and Head of Library Media Technical Assistant Program at Lenoir Community College in Kinston, a media coordinator at D.H. Conley High School in Greenville and a Media Center Supervisor at New Bern High School in New Bern. Representative McLawhorn received a B.S. in Business Administration, a Masters in Library Science, and an Educational Leadership and Supervision Certificate from ECU. She is married to Richard McLawhorn, has four children and five grandchildren.

Madeline Reed is the Media Coordinator/Teacher-Librarian at Randleman Middle School in Randleman, NC. She received her Master of Library Science degree in December 2008 from East Carolina University, and her Bachelor Degree from East Tennessee State University. This is her fifth full year in the library, serving 850 students and a staff of 70. Madeline spent approximately 20 years in the classroom and several years as middle school Lead Teacher. She actively collaborates with 48 of the staff of 70, and is trying to add more lessons and experiences to her repertoire.

Gerry Solomon joined the University of South Carolina’s School of Library and Information Science (USC-SLIS) faculty as an Instructor in July 2010. In addition to teaching she is responsible for placing and supervising school library interns in their practicums. She was previously the School Library Media Consultant with the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction’s Instructional Technology Division. She also has been an adjunct instructor at the UNC-Chapel Hill/School of Information and Library Science. Gerry has also been a school library media consultant in NC and in the Fairfax County (VA) Public Schools. She holds a MLS from the University of MD-College Park.

Alesia has managed and mentored a variety of school media centers and shares that comprehensive experience with her customers. She is a contributor to the UNC Press publication The Encyclopedia of North Carolina History. She also serves on the Vance Granville Community College Arts and Sciences Advisory Board and volunteers at her local public library to improve electronic resources and community outreach.

Tom Terrell has been teaching School Media Specialists, Librarians and Information Scientists since 1984. He has taught in the Colleges of Education at the University of Central Florida and University of South Florida. He moved to the SLIS at USF and taught there for another seven years before moving to a school media position in Brandon, Florida to facilitate the logistics of caring for his mother in her last years. He moved to North Carolina in 2008 to take the media center at Orange High, and a year later started teaching SLIS classes again at NC Central in the evenings. In his almost non-existent free time, he makes functional and sculptural turned wood art at Havenhill Studios in Durham.
