Dr. Sandra Andrews is an Assistant Professor at UNC-Greensboro.  She has worked as both a media specialist and a district media supervisor.  Sandra has presented both regionally and nationally on school library media topics and is active in ALA, AASL and NCSLMA.

Jennifer Weil Arns

Dr. Jennifer Weil Arns is an Associate Professor and Coordinator of Doctoral Studies at the University of South Carolina School of Library and Information Science, where she teaches classes related to public libraries, research methods, organization and communication theory, and program planning and evaluation. She is an author of the South Carolina Public Library Economic Impact Study and the Principal Investigator on an IMLS grant that focuses on this topic at the national level. She holds an A.B. from the Maxwell School of Citizenship at Syracuse University, an M.L.S. from the School of Library and Information Science at the University of California at Berkeley, an M.P.A. from the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University, and a Ph. D. from the School of Information and Library Science at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where she has often been a visiting professor.

Alan R. Bailey

Alan Bailey has been a member of the Coretta Scott King Book Awards Committee since 2006 and served as a member of the 2009 and 2010 Coretta Scott King Book Awards Jury.  This aspiring children’s author received his undergraduate degree from East Carolina University and holds advanced degrees from East Carolina University and North Carolina Central University.  Alan is currently Assistant Professor & Education Curriculum Librarian in the Teaching Resources Center at J. Y. Joyner Library.

Mary L. Boone

Mary L. Boone was appointed State Librarian of North Carolina in November 2005.  Prior to coming to the State Library, Mary was a Foreign Service Library and Information Resource Officer with the United States Information Agency and the U.S. Department of State for over twenty years, from 1985 – 2005, during which time she rose to the rank of Senior Foreign Service.  Mary’s service included tours in Asia, Europe, the Middle East, and Washington, D.C.  From 1999-2002, Mary served as the director of the State Department’s international library program, providing policy, programs and support to 175 libraries and information resource centers at U.S. embassies and consulates worldwide.      Prior to joining Foreign Service, Mary served as director of the Chapel Hill Public Library from 1978 to 1985 and was a founding member of the North Carolina Public Library Directors Association.  She is a lifelong member of the American Library Association.   A native of North Carolina, Mary received her BA and MSLS degrees from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.  The School of Information and Library Science Alumni Association presented her with its Distinguished Alumni Award in December 2003.     Among Mary’smost important duties as State Librarian is overseeing the administration of $15.8 million in State funding for North Carolina’s public libraries, and the dissemination of $4.6 million in Federal funding to all of North Carolina’s libraries.  In the past five years, the State Library has awarded over $3.6 million in School Library Collection Development grants to 386 schools in North Carolina. Mary was presented with the 2009 Library Director of the Year award by the North Carolina Public Library Directors Association on December 3, 2009.

Frances B. Bradburn

Frances Bryant Bradburn is a program director for the North Carolina New Schools Project who focuses on the 1:1 learning initiative pilot for the state.  The former Director of Instructional Technology for NCDPI, Frances is a graduate of Wake Forest University and UNC-G’s Department of Library and Information Science. She has worked at the K-12, university, and state levels in a variety of media and technology positions. The former editor of North Carolina Libraries, Ms. Bradburn is author of Output Measures for School Library Programs; reviews young adult titles for Booklist, and has written a variety of journal articles on both media and technology. Her current professional affiliations are with the American Library Association, the North Carolina School Library Media Association, the North Carolina Library Association, and the North Carolina Technology in Education Society. Ms. Bradburn was awarded the Mary Peacock Douglas Award in 1998, the UNC-G/SLIS Outstanding Alumnus in 1995, the East Carolina University Friend of Education in 2007, the NCLA Distinguished Service Award in 2007, the NCAECT Service Award in 2008, and North Carolina Association of School Librarians, Distinguished Service Award (now known as the Frances Bryant Bradburn Distinguished Service Award), October 2008.

Gloria Bradshaw

Gloria Bradshaw has worked as the Conservation Lab Manager of the Preservation and Conservation unit in Joyner Library at East Carolina University since 1993.  She serves on the Joyner Library Disaster Committee and is a member of the Preservation Task Force.  Gloria oversees all conservation treatments in the unit and is responsible for ensuring all Environmental Health and Safety regulations are followed.  Her training and research include art courses at ECU such as drawing and design, Solinet workshops in Preservation and Disaster planning, Book and Paper repair, Deacidification treatments, Mold Recovery and Library binding for preservation.  In pursuit of her training and research, Gloria has traveled from North Carolina to Maryland attending workshops at such institutions as ECU, State, Chapel Hill, Wake Forest, Etherington Conservation Center and Johns Hopkins.  She received the ECU Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Innovation in 1996.

Kelly Brannock

Kelly Brannock has been an elementary school media coordinator in North Carolina for 10 years.  She earned a Masters of Library and Information Science degree at San Jose State University in San Jose, California in 1998.  After moving to the North Carolina mountains, she worked at the Transylvania County Library and also headed a volunteer program to recruit and train volunteer storytellers for the Asheville-Buncombe Library System’s Preschool Outreach Program.  Kelly is a National Board Certified Teacher in Library Media and a member of ALA, AASL, and ASCD.   As a charter member of the North Carolina School Library Media Association (NCSLMA), she served two terms as the organization’s Mountain Region Director, was elected President-Elect in October 2008, and assumed the President’s post in November 2009.  Kelly also represents NCSLMA as a delegate to the AASL Affiliate Assembly.  When she’s not thinking about books and reading, networking with her PLN, or working on her laptop, Kelly loves visiting her son, a college freshman at UNCW, and strolling on the beach!

Evelyn Bussell is a North Carolina native who completed her undergraduate studies at East Carolina University and her graduate studies at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.  She is in her eighth year working in school library media centers and has experience in elementary and high schools, year-round and traditional calendar schools, as well as working on fixed and flexed schedules.  She has presented at several NCSLMA Annual Conferences, at the 2009 ALA Annual Conference, and most recently at the 2009 AASL National Conference.  Evelyn completed the portfolio and assessment for National Board Certification during the 2008-09 school year.

Patricia (Patch) Clark

Patricia (Patch) Clark is an Associate Professor and coordinator for both the Theatre for Youth and Theatre Education Programs at East Carolina University. She is also the Founder and Director of the ECU Storybook Theatre which tours to schools, libraries and festivals each year. She has appeared in many roles in both the ECU Loessin Summer Theatre and ECU/Loessin Playhouse. Some favorite roles include Rebecca Nurse in The Crucible , Aunt Abby in Arsenic and Old Lace, Mrs. Tarleton in Misalliance, Aunt Eller in Oklahoma, Beatrice in A View From The Bridge, Mrs. Gibbs in Our Town (which starred Pat Hingle), and Grandma in The Grapes of Wrath. Previous favorite professional acting credits include the American Revels Company’s production of Othello (Bianca) and A Christmas Carol (Scrooge’s Niece.) She has served as an educator, director, and consultant to both public and private schools including the Governor’s School for the Visual and Performing Arts and Humanities at the University of Richmond, Virginia, Virginia Commonwealth University and Longwood College and directed at the International Children’s Festival at the renowned Wolftrap Theatre in Vienna, Virginia. She is the author of Intergenerational Arts in the Nursing Home (Greenwood Press, 1991) and Seniors on Stage (Praeger, 1985.) Patch also serves as the Director of the ECU Summer Drama Camp K-12 held each year on the East Carolina University campus.

Donna Corbo has been a media specialist in Currituck County for 10 years.  Previously she was an elementary school teacher for grades K, 1 and 2.  In the past, she has presented at the NCSLMA annual conference as well as facilitated in the Librarian to Librarian Networking Summit. She also was a presenter at the AASL National Conference held in Charlotte in 2009.  Considered a lifelong learner, she has earned both her Master’s degrees from East Carolina University, one in Elementary Education and the other in Library Science.  She has also earned her National Board Certification.  In 2009, Mrs. Corbo completed her CAGS in Teacher Leadership from Northcentral University. At the present time she lives in Currituck County with her husband, daughter and 2 dogs!

Cathy DuPre is in her eighteenth year in education and in her eighth year as a Media Specialist in language immersion programs. She has been named Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools’ Gertrude Coward Award Winner for 2009-2010.She has presented workshops for her district (CMS), NCDPI Second Languages Teachers’ and Administrators’ Institutes, and has served a panelist and presented  workshops for NCSLMA.  Cathy has developed and shared her toolkit for services to the spanish-speaking (a guide of resources for the elementary school library Media Specialist).  She has written and received numerous grants for project based interdisciplinary units of study,  is a two time Time Warner Crystal Apple National Teacher Award Winner and has been named to “Who’s Who Among American Teachers.”

Sherry Edwards received her MLS from East Carolina in 2000.  She has served as a Media Specialist for the past 11 years.  She is currently the Media Specialist at Rock Ridge Elementary School in Wilson County.  She is a member of the Wilson County Librarian Association and NCSLMA.  She received a Read to Succeed Grant from NCSLMA in 2008.

Cheryl is a 25-year public school teacher who is a National Board certified-generalist in middle grades. She has been awarded the 2008 City of Greenville Environmental Awareness Award for individuals, 2006-7 NC Soil and Water Conservation Teacher of the Year, and the 2005-6 Floyd Mattheis Award for science teaching from ECU Continuing Ed in Science, Math, and Technology. She has a BA from the University of Evansville, IN and an MBA from Indiana University. Ms. Esarey is also certified in AIG and K-8 music.

Joanna Gerakios has a B.S. in Middle Grades Education and an MLS in Library Science from ECU. She has taught 8th grade language arts and social studies, and worked as a school media coordinator. Since first entering the public library as a child, and later as a parent and educator, she has been a library enthusiast. Joanna has an interest in bringing books and technology together to empower students with 21st Century learning skills. She currently works as a facilitator of instructional technology and media programs for the Pitt County school system.

Penny is a member of the consultant staff in the Library Development Section of the State Library of North Carolina, an agency of the NC Department of Cultural Resources. As Federal Programs Consultant she is responsible for working with the development and day-to-day implementation of the programs supported with federal Library Services and Technology Act funds administered by the State Library. Penny is a native of Knoxville, Tennessee, obtained a Bachelor of Arts from UT Knoxville, and a Masters in Library Science from Kent State University.

Her most recent book, Tales out of the School Library: Developing Professional Dispositions, which is co-authored with Gail Bush, will be available in January 2010.

Cheryl Lederle-Ensign has worked as an Educational Resources Specialist at the Library of Congress since December of 2003.  In that role, she has advanced the Library’s educational mission by providing more than 1,000 teachers with professional development through workshops, presentations, and intensive institutes, both in person and via videoconference.  She has also played a significant role in shaping the Library’s online repository of classroom materials and resources for teachers, loc.gov/teachers, and continues to contribute to the development of those materials.  Ms. Lederle holds a B.A. from Kent State University, an M.A.T. from the University of Chicago, and a Masters Degree in Library and Information Science from Syracuse University.  She has 15 years’ experience teaching English at both the high school and community college levels.

Madeline Reed is the Media Coordinator/Teacher-Librarian at Randleman Middle School in Randleman, NC. She received her Master of Library Science degree in December of 2008 from ECU, and her Bachelor Degree from East Tennessee State University. This is her 3rd full year in the library, serving 850 students and a staff of 70. Madeline spent approximately 20 years in the classroom and several years as middle school Lead Teacher. She actively collaborates with 48 of the staff of 70, and is trying to add more lessons and experiences to her repertoire. Ms. Reed lives in Greensboro, NC, has 3 adult sons, and misses the balmy breezes of Miami, her hometown!

Candace Sample is the media specialist at Jarvisburg Elementary School in Currituck County.  Mrs. Sample is a graduate of ECU and has spent her years as a fifth grade teacher, elementary dance teacher, and media specialist.  She has received training in brain-based learning through Eric Jensen’s 6-day Brain-Based Learning Workshop.  Mrs. Sample is always looking for ways to make learning an engaging experience for students and staff.

Alesia Stevenson is the local consultant for Mackin Educational Services.  She holds her Master’s of Library Science and has 15 years experience in a variety of educational areas.  Stevenson has managed and mentored a variety of school media centers and shares that comprehensive experience with her customers. Stevenson is a contributor to the UNC Press publication The Encyclopedia of North Carolina History.  She also serves on the Vance Granville Community College Arts and Sciences Advisory Board and works at her local public library to improve electronic resources and community outreach on a volunteer basis.

Joetta Stoner earned her MLS from ECU while working as a Media Coordinator in Wayne County and a part-time children’s librarian in Wilson County.  After three years in the school system, her dream job of YA Librarian opened at Wilson County Public Library where she is trying to attract more teens through increased programming and communication with media coordinators.

Dennis Teel

Dennis Teel is the principal at Falkland Elementary in Greenville, North Carolina.  He has served as an elementary and middle school teacher prior to becoming a middle school media specialist.  During his career, Dennis also worked at Sheppard Memorial Library and as evening reference librarian at Pitt Community College.  Mr. Teel has earned four degrees from East Carolina University and he has recently been admitted to their doctoral program in educational leadership.  He is also a graduate of the North Carolina Principal’s Executive Program and former certified Covey Trainer.  Dennis is a member of the PCAE, NCAE, NCATA, PCEAOP, PAPA, NCPAPA, NCASA, and NAESP/.  He is currently the District 1 President-Elect of the North Carolina Principal and Assistant Principal Association.  In 2003 he was inducted into the East Carolina Educators’ Hall of Fame.  Other awards and recognitions are the 2006 Wachovia Principal of the Year Award for Pitt County, the Wachovia Principal of the Year 2006 Northeast Regional Finalist, and the Administrator of the Year Award from the North Carolina School Library Media Association in 2007.  During his career, he has presented at NCAECT, NCMSA, NCAEE, and Southeast Regional Technology and Teaching Annual Conferences.
